Horsepower is the name given to horses that carry loads and draw cars. The Persian word 'bargir' (load bearing) has entered our language. The full Turkish equivalent of horsepovver, which is the international power measurement unit, is `` horse power '', but in Turks whose horse culture is very broad in origin, they have different names according to the breed, gender, color, and place of use.

Power is defined as the work done per unit time. It is not the work that something does in an unlimited time, but the work it does within a certain time. The expression of horsepower is the most common in the promotion of car engines today. One of the first things said when compiling a car is to indicate how high the horsepower of the engine is.

When we say a 100-horsepower car, it is perceived as the power to be obtained when 100 horses are attached to the front of the car instead of its engine. The story of accepting and measuring the strength of the horse as a unit dates back to 200 years ago, when nothing else was known when it came to carrying loads.

The term horsepower was first used by Scottish engineer James Watt, the most famous name in developing steam machines. His reputation is not limited to his studies in this field. In our daily life, the name is often mentioned. When we say 'the bulb is so watt', 'the vacuum cleaner is so kilowatt', we will also deny its name.

James Watt had to persuade customers about their power to better market the machines he developed. When he talked about the power of work at that time, he threw the most appropriate thing that people could visualize in their brains. For this reason, Watt chose the unit of "horsepower" to express the power of his machines. In this way, customers could compare the power of the machine they were purchasing with the power of the horse, and could be satisfied and decide more quickly.

In order to measure the power of the steam pump he developed, James Watt examined the horses run in the coal mine for carrying loads. As a result of his measurements, he determined that a horse could transport 45 kilograms of coal to a distance of 1.11 meters in one second. Thus, a horse would have done 50 kilograms per meter of weight. It is not known what the reason is, it increased this value by 50 percent and accepted 75 kilogram-meter as a power unit under the name horsepower.

Today, weightlifters lift several times the weight of 75 kilograms in the air. So human power is not much lower than horsepower. When a horsepower is converted into an electric power unit, it makes 746 watts, which is hard enough for a medium sized electric heater at home. For this reason, it is useful not to accept the horsepower expression as a unit of physics and not to compare it with horses. Otherwise, if we consider that we connect 200 thousand horses at intervals of five meters instead of the engines of an aircraft carrier at 200 thousand horsepower, it takes up almost 1,000 kilometers.
