Horsepower is the unit of power typically used to determine the power of automobiles and electric motors.

The term was created by James Watt in the years when the steam machines began to be produced, so that their power could be easily understood by potential buyers.

DEFINITION

Scottish engineer and physicist James Watt used the concept of "Horsepower" in 1872 in order to enable his customers to compare their ability to do business with existing systems.

Watt made the following calculation, assuming that a horse could spin a 12-foot radius mill wheel 144 times an hour or 2.4 times per minute, and that the force it exerts on the wheel is 180 lb-force.

SI PROVISIONS OF THE UNITS HERE:

1 ft (fit) = 0.3048 m
1 pound = 0.45359237 kg
1 lbf (pound-force) = g × 1 pound = 9.80665 m / s2 × 1 lb × 0.45359237 kg / lb = 4.44822 kgm / s2 = 4.44822 N

Work = Force x Path; Power = Work / Time; Power = (Force x Path) / Time

expression of,

(180 lbf) (2.4 x 2 pi x 12 ft) / 1 min = 32.572 (ft x lbf) / min

and Watt, who rounded 32.572 results from 33,000, defined this figure as 1 Horsepower.
